In this sixth presentation devoted to the Mysteries of the Holy Grail, we will approach Rudolf Steiner as a Grail initiate and Anthroposophy as a modern renewal of the Grail impulse. Steiner characterized Spiritual Science as a “Grail Science.” We will explore how this impulse found expression in Anthroposophy, the First Goetheanum, and subsequently in the Waldorf School movement. As we enter the Michaelmas season, we will turn toward one of the most challenging dimensions of the Grail Mystery: the confrontation with evil and the possibility of its redemption. Following a question raised after the previous presentation, we will consider Steiner’s indications concerning Mani and the Manichean stream, whose mission involves not merely combating evil, but developing the spiritual forces through which what has fallen may ultimately be transformed and redeemed. Through Anthroposophy we can follow threads connecting the Manichean and Parzival impulses with Rosicrucianism and their later metamorphosis within Anthroposophy. The great sculptural Representative of Humanity, intended as the focal point of the First Goetheanum, gives artistic expression to this mystery: Christ standing freely between the polar adversarial powers of Lucifer and Ahriman. This leads us into the relationship between Esoteric and Exoteric Christianity. During and following the centuries in which the Grail traditions came to literary expression, spiritual movements regarded as heretical were violently suppressed. The Cathars, with affinities to older dualistic and Manichean currents, were subjected to persecution and crusade. At Montségur, whose imposing fortress ruins still crown the mountain, some 225 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the foot of the Pog on March 16, 1244. The Knights Templar, whom Steiner connected esoterically with the Grail Mystery, were likewise suppressed little more than half a century later. We will ask what became of these hidden spiritual currents and how they may have reappeared in transformed forms. Finally, we will look beyond Christianity alone to explore, through Steiner’s Spiritual Science, the deeper esoteric relationships among the world religions, asking whether behind their diverse outer forms we may discern different expressions of a common spiritual evolution of humanity. In this Michaelmas season, the Grail Mystery thus confronts us not merely as a tradition belonging to the past, but as a living spiritual task for the present and future: to meet the forces of opposition consciously, to transform rather than merely destroy what has fallen, and to participate in the continuing renewal of the Mysteries.
